Composer, arranger, and trombonist JEFF FAIRBANKS resides in New York City, where he participates in the BMI Jazz Composers' Workshop, directed by Jim McNeely and Michael Abene. In the Workshop his latest compositions for large Jazz ensemble are read by the high-level BMI Jazz Orchestra. Additionally Jeff performs, composes and arranges as a freelancer, and runs a web-based music arranging/editing business.
Fairbanks' compositional talent has earned him the BMI Charlie Parker Award, ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award and finalist status for the IAJE's Gil Evans Fellowship. He also received Honorable Mention for the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer competition and recognition of Exceptional Achievement in Composition from the First Music Program. Among the settings his compositions have been performed in include the Montreux (Switzerland), Vienne (France), North Sea (Netherlands), and Umbria (Italy) Jazz festivals, the Amsterdam Trumpet Party, NYC's Merkin Concert Hall, Gasparilla Arts Festival (Tampa, Florida) and at several annual conferences of the International Association of Jazz Education. Such bands as the NY/BMI Jazz Orchestra, the Holland Big Band, numerous college Jazz ensembles, the Christian Howes String Quartet, and several of Jeff's own ensembles have performed his work.
Jeff is very active as a trombonist and group leader as well as a composer. Fairbanks recently completed a three-month stint with the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, with which he toured throughout the U.S. and Japan. Besides Glenn Miller, some of his credits as a performer include the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Carnival Cruise Lines, Busch Gardens International Band, Wayne Gorbea and Salsa Picante, Dan MacMillion Jazz Orchestra, Wito Rodriguez Salsa Jazz, and the Sarasota Opera Orchestra, among many others. He is involved in a number of New York-based ensembles as performer, leader, and/or composer. He has performed as a freelancer with many Jazz, Latin, Classical, and Commercial groups, and has appeared on numerous recordings. Music has brought him to Europe, Asia, Central America, the Caribbean, and throughout the U.S. Jeff is very grateful to God for the many wonderful opportunities he has been allowed to experience in music.
Fairbanks earned a Master’s degree in Jazz Composition at the University of South Florida, under the instruction of Chuck Owen. While at USF, over 20 of Fairbanks’ original compositions and arrangements were performed and/or recorded by various USF ensembles. During his degree he co-led student big bands, and worked as a copyist and transcriber with the Center for Jazz Composition at USF. A highlight of these duties for the CJC included a project in which Jeff transcribed previously unpublished Swing Era big band pieces from a donated collection of original 78 rpm records, and the works were performed by the Jazz Surge. Additionally, he created a new ensemble at the university, of trombones and rhythm section, termed Bone Band. He served as director, composer/arranger, and lead trombonist for this group, which toured Europe, performing at the Montreux and other Jazz festivals.
